This is a pretty petty issue, but if the original work has an open protagonist thing that you are supposed to fill in with your own character........ why not use the opportunity of fanfic.... to write the character.... why write fanfic with generic protagonists.... like i know that it's so the readers can insert their own character, but that always backfires and it's always so uninteresting. i like ocs!! i want to read about other people's ocs!! write!! about!! your ocs!!! in the same vein: stop with the character/reader thing for gods sake
Spoiler: re Riverdale spoiler & cw: fictional dysfunctional families In fairness to the taggers, the show acted like the revelation Polly Cooper and Jason Blossom were third cousins was very dramatic and shocking, and I guess they would have known before they got together and conceived their children if grandpa Cooper hadn't changed his last name after great-grandpa Blossom killed his father. Also, the show's whole brand is being 100% extra at all times, so I forgive it that the characters think it's a big deal. It could be related to antis? I don't really hang out in tumblr Riverdale fandom, just look at confession blogs/image edits on instagram and poke at AO3. Really, I'm just surprised anyone with a such a strong incest squick could make it past the first two episodes. Cheryl and Jason Blossom were... not canonically in a inappropriately sexual relationship? But they were 100% in an inappropriately emotional relationship. The twincest subtext was as strong as it could get and still be subtext.
Spoiler: nsfw, a lil bit i guess Yunno, for a pairing whose entire appeal to me, personally, is "wow, she kicked his ass and he thought it was super cool how she did that do", an awful lot of Reylo fics have Kylo doing the dom. And like, whatever, your kink is not my kink and that's cool or whatever, but goddamn, it's like a really pervasive thing to have even in stuff that isn't tagged BDSM, this sorta unsavory d/s undercurrent that just. Urgh. Like, someone writing that dynamic doesn't have to erase or downplay the traits of both those characters I find interesting. I know at least one author who can have Kylo do the dom and still be emotional, dependent, petty, a ridiculous self-sabotaging mess, etc, and Rey's still independent, goal orientated, resourceful, prone to black and white thinking, etc, but most shit just decides that he's just fucking, i dunno, smooth and cool and domineering and fucking boring, and Rey's a soft sweet shy little girl who needs looking after, and it's just. Urgh.
I have a bunch of old fanfics I want to continue but I don't really know where to take them. Plots are haaaard! I also sort of want to steal an old one from the kink meme. (Homestuck harem anime/dating sim parody; the bit someone did was hilarious. I want to steal it and have it with poor hapless John not wanting to date any of his troll harem and frantically trying to pair them off with each other, a la Herding Cats but with silly OOC anime tropes.) But writing takes a lot out of me.
I relate to this on a deep spiritual level. (typo: derp spiritual level, figured i should share that because it’s funny to me) Also vexing: when you have the ending planned out...but are completely stumped by the middle.
If a writer wants to do a wise-beyond-their-years kid questioning the Catholic Church, can it at least be a question to which a competent priest couldn't quickly produce an answer that would at least temporarily satisfy a six-year-old? Like "the devil punishes bad people because he's bad and bad people like to hurt each other too"?
Homestuck gripe; when a shippy fic would be cute but the constant references to thirteen-year-olds humping are really disturbing and offputting. Even if it's different for trolls, it's not different for me and I'm the one reading it.
(Also, like hell would Humanstuck Signless be mainstream Catholic. The whole point of him isn't that he's a religious figure, it's that he's a heretic.)
Not a mainstream Catholic, no. Not once that term becomes meaningful. You could have him as Jesus, if you didn't mind being so on the nose.
or have him be martin luther and nail his 95 thesises to the door, if you want to land somewhere in the middle.
It's not the premise of this fic I have a problem with (seems a bit pointless, but whatever), it's that the author chose to divulge a bunch of shit in the tags that belongs IN THE STORY. Georgie is missing? That goes IN THE STORY. Everyone is friends? IN THE STORY. Richie is blah blah about Eddie? PUT IT IN THE STORY. It's bad enough when authors infodump in author's notes, but in the damn tags?
Georgie has been lost for a fucking year?? There's like no food in the upside down, and the atmosphere is toxic. Georgie has been dead for 51 weeks, more like.
Plus Georgie's what, like six years old? Georgie is extremely dead. Which…I guess is true to IT, but a little bit harsh for a fluff fic.
Even if they don't want to bother showing all the backstory and character stuff in the fic itself, AO3 gives you a summary box and author's notes for a reason, author.
“Optics” is an even worse substitution for “eyes” than “orbs”. “Orbs” is at least a metaphor, if an overused one, “optics” is its own damn word that doesn’t mean eyes (unless you’re talking about robots but that’s not the context) Why can’t people just fucking say eyes when they mean eyes holy shit
Eh, people can put what they want in the tags. As long as they've tagged important things that should be tagged, I don't care how an author tags their work.
