Look at this twink ass bitch. There’s no way he isn’t into getting smacked around just so he can watch the look of righteous indignation slip off your face when you realize he doesn’t give a shit. Josh is 90% shit stirring by volume. I love him so much.
He'd critique your strangling. Spoiler: Uh I was writing hypothetical dialogue for someone passive aggressively judging his own strangulation but it got weird so I leave it as an exercise for the reader.
Honestly most sex workers aus have me like :/ in general. I feel like a lot of the ones I've seen are overall very anti-sw, clearly research was not done, and their language is really outdated so offensive terms are abound. I know not every sex worker au is like that, but I've definitely seen PLENTY that are. Not to mention when the author works in the 'I'm not like those other *I'm not gonna say the offensive term, it's not mine to reclaim' sentiment. Like ??? Please do not use your narrative to punch down at sex workers.
I’ve read One good sex worker au, a fic from the watchmen kinkmeme, and every other one I’ve looked at has been... eeeeeeeehhhh :/
It's not usually the quality of the writing that bothers me, it's the fact that the many sex worker au fics are clearly written by people with a lot of internalized bias toward sex workers. Which is definitely a big issue in society in general, I'm not trying to single individuals out. But I feel like if you're going to write about a marginalized group, you need to make an effort to be sensitive towards the members of said groups. Don't have your main characters spend the entire fic slut-shaming and throwing slurs and talking about how the character who is the focus of the fic is better than the rest of these icky sex workers, they're not some kind of degenerate drug addict or something. That's really, really Not Cool and resources DO exist to help you avoid these pitfalls.
Yeesh, I have friends who are drug addicts. They’re not degenerate. That kind of talk will likely make me sympathize with anyone other than the main character.
This is incredibly petty, all things considered, but: Detroit: Become Human fic where the authors remember that thirium is blue, so talk about hickies leaving blue marks... and forget that androids, when showing damage on the skin, display white plastic instead of bruising. It's such a little detail, but seeing it gotten wrong so often grates like hell.
THEN THEY ARE VERY WRONG (though at least in these fics, it also takes place in the context of 'being grabbed hard enough to leave bruises' and 'hitting the ground hard enough to hurt' which are both very clearly White Plastic situations)
This is maybe less a gripe and more a... personal observation(?), but: it probably says something about me that I am strongly tempted to word-replace this (non-Homestuck) fic I'm reading and change every instance of the word "zucchini" into "moirail," because that would sound less silly to me. I've got no problems with QP relationships or anything, it's just... that word... I really can't take it seriously...
'An arbitrarily chosen word used to refer to relationships with strong emotional bonds that fall outside of the typical romantic relationship but are more than just friendship.' from the urban dictionary entry for zucchini
It's coming up a lot in this fic, and every time I read it I have a split-second moment of "wait why is there produce in his hospital room? Why is the produce holding his hand??" and have to re-orient myself.
theres this thing that some writers sometimes do when they wanna emphasize that someone is monosexual where they hit the "man oh man, they sure don't wanna date THAT GENDER" a little too hard and it edges into misogyny or misandry it's bad feels and it's stickered onto my fave
i'm just disappointed because i thought it was a really cool-sounding word but then i looked up the meaning and it's a fucking courgette
