Jumping back to the chapter numbers, there's a fic I really like where the author numbered the chapters backwards, so it Three - Two - One. Except they also had a prologue, so you ended up with situations like Chapter 2: Three, and then Chapter 3: Two. (I mostly found the chapter number weirdness amusing-- but it would've been nice if the author had the option to list the prologue as Chapter 0.)
not enough femslash and yuri in existence. cranky about this. why not femslash feb all year all years. other reasons to learn japanese better tbh. can get more of this content because fanfiction very often does not do the job for me unless it is either a yuri work, something with a cast so heavily female that not having more f/f would be absurd, or a fandom where the other big non-yuri ship was run out of town by an angry mob (for years of sustained cruelty, yes, but god damn).
you know how i said i never want to read no-powers meet-cutes? of course i promptly ran across an exception. that'll teach me to make blanket statements.
those fandoms where none of the fanfiction is ever quite satisfying, because what you really want is just more canon and nothing can quite measure up. current frustration is of course Good Omens
Buffy has the best crossover fics. That’s not a gripe. The gripe is there’s no way to search for crossovers.
wait, what site are you looking on? ao3 has a "crossovers only" option in their filtering now! (although it doesn't work great for things like marvel, where people will tag "captain america" And "avengers" in the fandom section. im not familiar enough with Buffy to know if that's an issue there)
i was unable to sleep last night due to the spinal cyst dance party, and spent the time reading buffy crossovers. there was a particularly good bleach one, though i was disappointed her zanpakuto wasn't named mr. pointy. thanks, @Erica . i never noticed that button!
bleach crossovers are possibly the most frequent, and it makes sense when you think about it. buffy's died twice, slayers die young, the shinigami are dead people with fighty spiritual powers. so the slayer dies and her soul goes on to become a defender of the dead. makes perfect sense to me. also, i've seen two separate fics so far where she becomes besties with yumichika based on a shared obsession with hair products. i dunno man, if it works it works. *shrug*
"....everyone respected him, because he was a respectable guy." that's. it's played straight. this is a legit part of the character establishing monologue help i've fallen into maze runner fandom and i... hate all of it. but don't want to actually engage with the source material enough to write my own shit
do you ever have a piece of media that's very good, and because of that, it feels like you have to give it Effort and Attention to read, so you end up putting off reading the latest chapters because it'll take too much mental energy
Big agree! Also a similar, self inflicted problem: when you subscribe to a story that's 300k+ words long, but when a new chapter comes out its been long enough that you have to consider... Rereading... To remember what's happening.
I have Many stories I’m currently waiting to get back to while I consume media that matters far less to me or revisit familiar media, because I don’t think I’m in the right headspace or have enough energy for certain things. Some things, like the first season of Game of Thrones, I can consume once, go “okay I guess?” and then come back later, try again, and revise my opinion to “awesome”. (I was going to give House of Cards another go after a Big Shrug, but now I’m thinking probably not.) But it’s nicer and more efficient to just be able to enjoy it the first time. Also HUUUUGE hat to the longfic update issue. I adore long stories because they give me so much time and space to wallow in a world I enjoy, but that also kinda makes it sensitive to broken flow. I have that problem with season 2 of a lot of TV shows, too. I don’t necessarily want to rewatch all of season 1, but the recaps could be a little more comprehensive or I’ll spend four or five episodes trying to feel like I’m not confused about what’s going on and why. Who are these people again? Why is this guy upset with that hot dog vendor?
Same hat same hat. Sometimes I just reread the previous chapter, rather than starting over from the very begining, but if it's been too long since I read the whole thing that might not be enough...
I feel like fics like Fall of Equestria would go roughly like this comic if anyone was writing in-character and I've found parodies but none which take this particular route. Disappointing.
i have four different (now completed) fics i kept meaning to go back and reread things to make sure i knew where i was with the new chapter, but it felt like it required so much effort to brain for that that i didn't and now they are finished, all in the ballpark of 150-200k words, and i am just... not ready to start them from the beginning otl
