i have a tendency to forget all the characters except the handful i'm focusing on exist, so i mostly notice the vanishing women when my favorites are among them. where'd black widow go, you guys? where's pepper? i thought this was avengers fic taking place in stark tower, but you don't have natasha and pepper? what happened?
I don't read enough f/f to know, does lesbian-written fiction have a similar problem with vanishing men? Intuition says no on the grounds of women getting forgotten a lot of the time in het fiction too but not men.
In fanfic? Not the ones I've read. (Though, admittedly, most of the f/f I've read has been in pretty even-gendered fandoms where f/f is the background constant of the m/m and vice versa.) In origfic? I'd have to reread the ones I've had on hand to check, but with the exception of the 'family drama' plotlines that necessitate bringing in family members of the opposite sex to prove how evil they are (a thing both m/m and f/f fiction I've read has done) I am pretty confident saying most of the f/f I've read has had vanishing me. Unless, of course, there's a point to be made about sexism. So... 50/50, depending on how escapist the piece is.
Either way it's fairly creepy when it happens, especially when a character is supposed to have reproduced and apparently did so by binary fission. (Trans/NB people of course don't show up in these either.)
There's only one case of forgotten men I can think of with f/f fic and that's Yuuno from Nanoha. Part of that is out of spite because Yuunoha fans were very dickish to Nanofate fans. Nanoha shipping wars were extremely bitter and after years of abuse people were not kind when Nanofate was deemed canonical. Yuuno also dropped in part because the series itself used him less and less. He hardly appears in StrikerS and is non-existent in post StrikerS stuff.
why does everyone in the GOmens fandom interpret "angels are sexless unless they make an effort" as "smooth like a ken doll despite their otherwise spot-on human corporations"? it makes no sense! you can have genitalia without having a gender or sexuality! just because they don't have a driver installed doesn't mean the hardware isn't there!!! also while i'm at it, there needs to be more celestial mindmeld angel xeno porn. i ask you what is the point of having supernatural immortal beings of pure spirit if you're just gonna make them fuck like humans? let’s get weird with it
admittedly, it's not clear whether crowley ever wears shoes, or has human feet, or just has shoe-shaped snakeskin-covered nubs at the end of his legs. so. them going 'eh, just do whatever with those bits' has, well, whatever basis that is.
I like to think sometimes they mix and match bits on purpose and other times they simply forget or just plain don't realize that things aren't lined up 100% to human expectations.
I can't help but wonder if the writers are subconsciously drawing off the other comedy about the biblical apocalypse, Dogma? I only remember, like, three things from that movie and one of them is that the Metatron is 'as anatomically impaired as a Ken doll' complete with visual aids.
this is 100% selfish and petty but how are people this prolific, and why isn't it possible for them to kick a little functionality my way? ;_;
In fairness, I personally have started many fics, posted a chapter or two, and completely forgotten about them, which makes AO3 think I’ve written WAY more than I have, so it’s possible that’s what happened there? That said, 504 is just...dang.
the one i quoted turned out to be mostly 300 word drabbles. but still. i'd punch a priest to be able to write 300 words a day right now.
you can't... put a tourniquet on someone's middle. if you mean bandage, author, say bandage. better yet, stop trying to write action and violence until you have at least read some, or watched a few action movies where you weren't distracted by shippy feels, because frankly every word of that chapter was a big cringe. not every stucky fic has to have a random hydra goon kidnap attempt. there are other ways to make your oc's-with-canon-names realize that life is fleeting and they might as well smooch. honestly, when i saw that an avengers fic had a warning for 'gun violence' in the author's note i should've hit the back button. that's never a good sign.
Somebody left a comment on one of my fics that was just a complaint about the lack of content for the fandom. It wasn't even my most recent fic in said fandom. ::::::||||||
I could understand mentioning the lack of content in the context of an actual review—like, “I love this fic! The characterization was top-notch, and in a fandom with so little content good works like yours bring me so much joy! Great job!” or something—but why the actual fuck would that be your entire review????? So sorry you had to deal with that, it sucks when you get a comment notification (which I always get super excited about, personally!) and then the comment is...like that. :/
