I have quite wide hips due mostly to bone structure, so I'm very curvy from the front and really not from the side. And yeah that is definitely a strange assumption about wide hips. Panties stretch? Like, if you get a cut that just doesn't actually work for you then the worst thing that happens is there's a bit of extra fabric, which isn't honestly all that much of a problem unless you're wearing something where panty lines would be a concern. The fabric doesn't just go wherever it pleases. There's usually some sort of elastic around the edges, or if not, it's probably not made of fabric that would bunch easily, because why would you do that?

Ime, thongs are actually more tetchy than panties if you have wide hips. Because the sides of a thong are often quite narrow, the fit is far less forgiving. If it's slightly too loose it's like bra straps that keep falling off your shoulders but even more awkward to push back into place. If it's slightly too tight it makes quite a striking indent in any flesh your hips have to offer, making it one of the last things I'd use to solve the problem of visible panty lines. There just isn't enough fabric to distribute pressure, so it's either a near perfect cut in every dimension, or it's digging into you. It's not uncomfortable, it just looks weird. Even fabric that wouldn't normally bunch or roll will do exactly those things if you cut it into thin enough strips, and it will probably do them worse because it's still valiantly trying to hold a shape.

As far as I'm concerned, thongs are perfectly comfortable, but I wouldn't usually attempt to wear a one under anything thinner than denim. I quite like the curve of my hips, and I won't tolerate it to be marred by stringy underpants. I do not have the time to try to shop for perfectly cut thongs. There's a limited amount of trying-on you can do with panties in most places, and it's definitely not gonna be adequate for thongs.

I have a pretty big butt myself and I've never found that, but it could def be a matter of general personal comfort? (And I find thongs mad uncomfy in general tbf.)

I saw a twitter thread a couple weeks ago of some folks saying non-thong underwear just gives them wedgies so they just go for thongs (presumably bc then its....a deliberate wedgie?)

    (Eta2: this was the thread)

In the end, i assume that writer just wanted to be like "how can i give this character an excuse to wear underwear i think is sexy.....oh i kno, shes got ~too much~ hips/butt for other underpants, im very clever"

Eta: reminds me of like certain porn writers who are like "and her BOBS are LARGE and HOT and they DONT need a bra to look supported bc uhhh SEXY"

Now this is absolutely baffling because that's my whole issue with the damn things.

Inclined to agree with your assessment that it was just for the sexy and they needed an excuse for some reason though.

For me, the problem with a wedgie in regular panties is the bunched up fabric that won’t stay put, which is extremely horrible. Ime thongs don’t do that. They stay where they’re supposed to, at least in that area, so no horrible slow creeping sensation, and they aren’t bunching because they don’t have excess fabric. I’m sure this is not the universal thong experience, it’s just An Important First Hand Account Of How Thongs May Avoid Triggering Wedgie Discomfort. It doesn’t feel like a wedgie or really anything that draws attention to itself for me because it’s not shifting around.

I stumbled across a thing once where someone was talking about how you might wear a thong for certain types of like, weightlifting and stuff, because your underwear will end up there anyways so might as well wear something that's actually designed to do that since it'll be more comfortable than underwear that isn't supposed to do the thing

This is why, during one 18ish hour marathon, I went through my bookmarks and saved a copy of every single fic I've ever bookmarked on AO3. That kind of thing is a disappointing upsetting thing, and I had been looking for one fic in particular, and it was gone. >:(

Protip: if you ask r/fanfiction, there is a chance they will be able to find it. Possibly my favorite SU fic got deleted at some point, and when I finally posted there asking if anyone had it saved, some kindly person linked to a PDF they’d saved of it. It’s not a sure thing of course, but it’s worth a shot!

Witnessed either way though, it always sucks when that good shit gets deleted.

i bought an entire fucking external hard drive for that shit. i've been working my way through my bookmarks (i'm about 110/1234, but the 1234 is counting series as "one" and i have at least three i've opened up with 20+ fics in the series itself. i know i have two separate series bookmarked that are each over a 100 fics. and i have the attention span of a goldfish and internet that wants to cosplay as dial up)

i've already come across 2 works that were deleted :( and i didn't put ANY kind of notes on my bookmarks back then, so who knows what they were. (i put title and author in my bookmarks now, but i only started doing that this year)

The fact that I've just agreed to do a Hiveswap porn parody of an entire movie, and suggested I would try to do the songs. I refuse to let the Drone-Season-given opportunity for such a thing to exist to be passed up, but the bother of the whole thing is it has to be me that does it. Isn't there some kind of fanfic subcontracting service?

I’m a little confused at some of the “do not copy” bits I see sometimes.

Do not copy to another site? Extremely reasonable. Should really go without saying, but that’s certainly not the fault of the people saying it.

No podfics? I mean, I can imagine it could be very uncomfortable to have a reading of your work in a stranger’s voice without permission, which is now either visibly attached to your work or not fully credited. Especially if it’s a particularly personal or explicit work. Awkward???? I like the added accessibility option that podfic offers, but I can really understand not being comfortable with it being done to your work by people you didn’t personally select, or maybe even anyone.

No translations? Oooookay? Maybe people have their own translators lined up or simply don’t feel like the translators out there are on their wavelength? Or maybe they just don’t want people to translate without asking, but that is not what it usually says. This one I really don’t understand. Only translate with permission, sure, but don’t translate at all? Why?

And then there was the one that said do not add to rec lists or post snippets on other sites. That really seems like a bit much? Especially since it was near the end of a paragraph that wrapped up with a threat to regarding copyright claims. Rec lists and many other things with snippets are quite solidly fair use. Because this is a strange request that goes far beyond what is usually considered reasonable, some explanation of the problem (having my fic exposed to outside sources of traffic makes me uncomfortable) and an actual request (and I’m asking you to please respect that) would read more like, oh, I don’t get it but okay. But calling for no rec lists, no snippets, and adding an unclear threat of possibly illegal legal action is a very iffy vibe.

I've never encountered "do not req" on a fic that wasn't the kind of thing antis would harass someone for, so I always assumed it was a "please don't draw attention to my works b/c I don't want to get dogpiled"

Slightly off topic, but all lot of the people who don't want their fic to be translated because they can't check that the translation is what it claims to be. If you don't speak the language, you can't check that translator has translated it accurately, or isn't passing off their own fic as yours.
