When people write a fic on ao3 and it looks like it's going to be one thing but it's actually just several paragraphs shaming people who read/enjoy fics about that thing. This is specifically a callout post for this Killing Stalking "fic": https://archiveofourown.org/works/9215435?view_adult=true
That is the biggest waste of effort I've ever seen. And the comments, whoo boy. Lightning round: Uh, in my experience, there's no more rape in bara than in any other kind of porn. Not that I'm an expert, but I have read a lot of bara. (That comment goes on to say that yes, people are disgusting for liking…horror and porn, I think?…but that's okay, something something BDSM because all BDSM is roleplay and rape fantasy I guess and basically this person is wrong.) lol. "Uh, yeah, people who like the comic are awful, but your character interpretation is wrong. NOT THAT I LIKE THE COMIC!" "If all the interesting parts were taken out it would be fine!" (The rest of this comment is more "not like I like the comic or anything BUT—" virtue signaling. Get over yourself.) Did…did you also explain to your poor friends that he's a fictional psychopath? 'Cause I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't. Also, "it's okay to like anything BUT NOT THIS THING!" "Freaks". Right. Okay. 1. you're wrong about bara 2. you're wrong about BDSM And finally, a truly excellent comment: This commenter is the hero we need. (Sorry this got so long, I was enjoying myself.)
Something about that entire comment, specifically that part, strikes me as... Fairly homophobic, in context with all this? Like this tone of "gay men have violent and abusive porn", with an already existing line of "if you like violent and abusive porn, that means you're a violent and abusive person, and deserve to die". Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but I do feel like there's this underlying current with a lot of this anti response that's not just regressive but also kind of homophobic and creepy. Regardless, I think I can report this as being harassment (in the basis of it being an anti-fic that's more of a screed against a fandom than actually a story), although most of their anti-harassment is more for a single person than in the basis of "bash fics".
I'm sitting here going "... but I know plenty of women who are super into bara, there's an artist in my fandom that's infamous for portraying one character as bara for no reason, what do you mean it's all by gay men for gay men?"
so wait, not only is it problematic that women make gay porn, now it's problematic that gay men make gay porn? what the hell. shouldn't it be even more problematic that women criticize gay men for their porn?
actually you know what it's most problematic that TEENAGERS criticize gay men for their porn. stop fucking looking at that if you don't like it, you underage little shits. also, who else remembers the 'i'm not homophobic but yaoi is disgusting' fangirl brigades of the early 00's?
That was me. I didn't realise how much it bothered me until I got into Gravity Falls. Where you have mentally ill characters of ambiguous sexuality (the gender headcanons are a little more implausible, because if you're afab and aren't together enough to remember to take your T you won't grow a three-foot long beard) who were born in the 1950s. And it's super sad because you can actually take the bigotry of the era and write it into their backstories and have it work out just beautifully as motivation for some of the really unfortunate things they did. Like when you're a man having an affair with a married man, get funding from less than above-board sources, and have a brother who could easily be thrown in jail or disappeared based on his arrest record in multiple jurisdictions, you can't actually really say no to being asked to manipulate a presidential candidate through mind control even if that candidate's backers have it in for people like you. Particularly if they turn out to be behind some of the money you got. Which is a situation in which even the stupidest demon scamming you about how to fix your universe's problems might not sound so dumb. (Anyone who knows about the "Never Mind All That Act" and doesn't think GF has great dystopic potential, I don't understand...)
Let me explain about Troper Tales. Basically TV Tropes' then owner was of the policy that the best way to keep crap off the main pages was to give people other pages to be stupid on, because it was easier to enforce "wrong place!" than "this crap shouldn't be on the site." There had become a bit of a surfeit of people adding their own personal anecdotes to pages, so this is what he did. Unfortunately those places ended up concentrating the stupid to toxic levels.
Yup. I was on in the pre-Troper Tales days, even before they separated the examples by medium, and I remember when you'd scroll down and it'd just be this random mix of Buffy and anime and webcomics and This Troper's random life events.
Alternatively learn how to force yourself into a natural crying fit. Which has been how I've done it in the past when I was AN AWFUL HUMAN BEING.
The only good thing to come out of troper tales was the pencil story. Which was an epic on par with the he ate my pencil scene of that one anime.
Pencil story? Another gripe is when you click on a fic and then you start reading and then you keep reading and you're waiting for the end of the sentence but it never seems to come and you say "this is stupid" and the sentence continues on and on and on and on and on and on and on...
Some guy at some dudes school thst would break your pencils. It was this weirdlu long and dramatic story about hus evil pencil breaking eays.
The pencil Troper Tale: I still can't figure out what he meant by that last sentence. This is another popular one, from the Took A Level In Badass page: Troper Tales was good if you like things that definitely never happened.
