i haven't even watched this movie but just butting in since apparently night howler victims have like, physiological differences from regular mammals, but nick is able to convincingly pass as a night howler victim? but he also spent a bunch of time in close quarters with a night howler refinery or something, and there was...either nick or judy handling concentrated night howler? and the guy who was refining it had on hazmat gear and apparently looked a little less anthropomorphic? anyways: headcanon that whatever caused the mass uplifting of mammals was magic and did both mental and physical changes, and night howler is also magic (hence the permanent effects if concentrated) and partially reverses the physical changes and plays merry hell on the mental changes, but just exposure to the fumes of night howler concentrate or handling concentrate pellets bare-handed can have permanent physical effects; nick and judy can now both do the eye thing, or go quadrupedal physically comfortably quadrupedal movement is faster but can't be done for as long
