The Night Of Swords

Nul offers the knife back to Mutt. "I don't have anywhere to keep this."

 

"Oh! I'll give you something for it later. I can keep it for now." They slip the knife back into its sheath and turn to Legion. "So is he going to be okay?"

 

"Oh, yeah. If Legion and I turned out fine, Null'l be A-OK. Just need to make sure we get the rest of the important stuff taught, y'know?"

 

"Okay! What else is important? Can I help?"

 

"Well, yeah. The question is figuring out what's important first." Legion groans. "Uuuuhm. Okay. So... I dunno."

 

"Uhhh. Entertainment? Gambling?"

 

"Okay. How do I do those?"

 

Legion grabs a deck of cards and clears the table. "Alright. Let's start with poker."

 

Nul sits down at the table and looks at the cards. "Higher cards are better, right?"

 

"Yes. And pairs, triples, and runs of things, as well."

 

"Okay. How many cards do I get? What do I do on my turn?"

 

"Well, let's start from the top..." Even grins, fire bright behind his smokey teeth, and begins teaching Null poker.

 

Nul picks it up fairly quickly, though sometimes he uses rules from other games without realizing.

 

The night draws towards Dinner, and Legion and Even lead their new twins down to the dining hall.

 

Mutt bounces as they walk, trying to explain to Nul why killing bad people is important and necessary.

 

Legion smiles proudly and indulgently, ruffling Mutt's hair.

 

What Mutt's saying makes sense, for the most part. Sometimes Nul can't quite figure out what they mean, but not too often.
